In true PONY style, CSA boys and girls who play in the league from ages 3-12 will progress from coach pitch to nearly full baseball rules (steals, leadoffs, balks, etc.). Here are the highlights of gameplay for our divisions:  


(Note: In the spring season, a child's baseball age is the age the child is on August 31 -- i.e., if child turns 9 on August 31, the child's baseball age is 9, and child is considered a Mustang player; if child turns 9 on September 1, the child's baseball age is 8, and child is considered a Pinto player. In the fall season, a child's baseball age is the age the child will be on August 31 of the next year.)


FOAL (Ages 3-4)

  • Coach pitch/tee ball
  • Teams determined by Division Commissioner
  • One weekday practice, one Saturday game
  • 1-hour, drop-dead game-time limit
  • All players play entire game defensively
  • Continuous batting order (all players bat)
  • No strikeouts
  • No walks
  • Players who don't put ball into play after 5 coach pitches hit from tee  
  • 5-run max per half-inning
  • 50-foot baselines
  • Foal All-Star Game at midseason; participants elected by player and coach vote

 

SHETLAND (Ages 5-6)

  • Machine pitch/tee ball
  • Teams determined by Division Commissioner
  • One weekday practice, one weekday game, one Saturday game
  • 1-hour-15-minute, drop-dead game-time limit
  • All players play entire game defensively
  • Continuous batting order (all players bat)
  • No strikeouts
  • No walks
  • Players who don't put ball into play after 5 machine pitches hit from tee  
  • 5-run max per half-inning
  • 50-foot baselines
  • Shetland All-Star Game at midseason; participants elected by player and coach vote
  • End-of-season Shetland playoffs; trophies to division champs and runners-up
  • Opportunity to try out for Crescenta Valley Shetland PONY All-Stars summer tournament team(s)

 

PINTO (Ages 7-8)

  • Machine pitch/kid pitch (first half of season); kid-pitch only (second half of season through playoffs)
  • Teams determined by coach draft
  • One weekday practice, one weekday game, one Saturday game
  • 1-hour-30-minute, drop-dead game-time limit
  • 10-player field (all players play minimum of every other inning)
  • MLB/USA Baseball Pitch Smart pitch-limit guidelines enforced
  • Continuous batting order (all players bat)
  • Strikeouts
  • Walks (during kid-pitch innings and kid-pitch games)
  • No balks
  • Steals (during kid-pitch innings and kid-pitch games), with no leadoffs; home plate closed
  • No bunts
  • Dropped third strike recorded as an out
  • 6-run max per half-inning
  • 60-foot baselines
  • 40-foot pitcher's mound
  • 38-foot machine-pitch distance
  • Pinto All-Star Game at midseason; participants elected by player vote
  • End-of-season Pinto playoffs; trophies to division champs and runners-up
  • Opportunity to try out for Crescenta Valley Pinto PONY All-Stars summer tournament team(s)

 

MUSTANG (Ages 9-10)

  • Kid pitch
  • Teams determined by coach draft
  • One weekday practice, one weekday game, one Saturday game
  • 1-hour-45-minute, drop-dead game-time limit
  • 10-player field (all players play minimum of every other inning)
  • MLB/USA Baseball Pitch Smart pitch-limit guidelines enforced
  • Continuous batting order (all players bat)
  • Strikeouts
  • Walks
  • No balks
  • Steals, with no leadoffs; home plate closed
  • Bunts
  • Batter may attempt to reach base on dropped third strike
  • 10-player field (all players play minimum of every other inning)
  • 6-run max per half-inning
  • 60-foot baselines
  • 46-pitcher’s mound
  • Mustang All-Star Game at midseason; participants elected by player vote
  • End-of-season Mustang playoffs; trophies to division champs and runners-up
  • Opportunity to try out for Crescenta Valley Mustang PONY All-Stars summer tournament team(s)

 

BRONCO (Ages 11-12)

  • Kid pitch
  • Teams determined by coach draft
  • One weekday practice, one weekday game, one Saturday game
  • 2-hour, drop-dead game-time limit
  • MLB/USA Baseball Pitch Smart pitch-limit guidelines enforced
  • Continuous batting order (all players bat)
  • Strikeouts
  • Walks
  • Balks
  • Steals, with leadoffs; home plate open
  • Bunts
  • Batter may attempt to reach base on dropped third strike
  • 10-player field (all players play minimum of every other inning)
  • Open innings
  • Mercy rule when team down by 10 runs after 5 innings
  • 70-foot baselines
  • 50-pitcher’s mound
  • Bronco All-Star Game at midseason; participants elected by player vote
  • End-of-season Bronco playoffs; trophies to division champs and runners-up
  • Opportunity to try out for Crescenta Valley Bronco PONY All-Stars, summer tournament team(s)

 

PONY (Ages 13-14)

  • Rules and fields determined by Glendale/La Crescenta Babe Ruth
